In 1453, Mehmet The Conqueror defeated the Byzantines, took Constantinople, and Greece was folded into the Ottoman Empire. It would remain so until, in 1821, the Greek War of Independence and the struggle to establish the First Hellenic Republic began.
Fawned over by Western-European nobles, Lord Byron among them, the rebels of the Filiki Eteria (Friendly Brotherhood) wouldn't officially retake the state for another 10 years.
This rifle, inscribed along the stock with Greek battalion markings, is a part of that history.
